How to Forward Phone Calls From Your Existing Number (Step-by-Step Guide for Every Carrier)

Get your AI phone agent answering calls in minutes — no number change required.

You just signed up for echowin and got a shiny new phone number with an AI agent ready to handle your business calls 24/7. There's just one problem: your customers, your Google Business listing, your business cards, and your website all have your old number on them.

The good news? You don't need to change anything. By setting up call forwarding from your existing business number to your new echowin number, every incoming call will be automatically routed to your AI agent — and your callers won't notice a thing.

This guide walks you through exactly how to set up call forwarding on every major U.S. carrier, landlines, and VoIP services so your echowin AI agent can start taking calls immediately.

Why Forward Calls Instead of Switching Numbers?

When you first get started with echowin, we recommend forwarding calls from your existing number to your new echowin number rather than switching outright. Here's why:

Test the waters risk-free. Call forwarding lets you experience echowin's AI agent handling real calls from real customers without making any permanent changes to your phone setup. If you want to adjust your agent's instructions, tone, or workflow, you can do that while calls keep flowing in.

Zero downtime for your business. Your customers keep dialing the same number they always have. There's no "we changed our number" announcement, no missed calls during a transition period, and no need to update your marketing materials right away.

Reverse it anytime. Call forwarding can be turned off in seconds. If you ever need to go back to answering calls yourself — during a staff meeting, for example — you just disable forwarding and your phone rings like normal again.

A stepping stone to porting. Once you've seen your echowin AI agent in action and you're ready to commit, you can permanently port (transfer) your existing phone number into echowin. But forwarding first lets you make that decision with confidence, not guesswork.

Before You Start: What You'll Need

Setting up call forwarding takes less than two minutes. Here's what to have ready:

  1. Your echowin phone number. You can find this in your echowin dashboard under your agent's info, or by visiting echo.win/portal/numbers.
  2. Your existing phone (the one with the number you want to forward from). You'll need to dial a short code or adjust settings from this device.
  3. A second phone or a friend's phone to test that forwarding is working after you set it up.

That's it. No technical expertise required.

Don't have an echowin number yet? Head over to echo.win/portal/numbers to browse and purchase a phone number for your AI agent. You can pick a number with a local area code that matches your business, or choose a toll-free number — it only takes a moment.

How to Forward Calls on Every Major Carrier

Verizon

To forward all calls:

  1. Open the phone/dialer app on your Verizon device.
  2. Dial *72 followed by your 10-digit echowin phone number (e.g., *725551234567).
  3. Press Call/Send.
  4. Wait for a confirmation tone or message. Once you hear it, forwarding is active.

To forward only unanswered calls (your phone rings first, then forwards if you don't pick up):

  1. Dial *71 followed by your echowin number.
  2. Press Call/Send and wait for confirmation.

To turn off forwarding:

  • Dial *73 and press Call/Send.

Alternative method: You can also activate call forwarding through the My Verizon app under Account → Preferences → Manage Call Forwarding.

Tip: Verizon does not charge a monthly fee for call forwarding on current plans. Forwarded calls are billed like regular calls based on your plan's minute allowance.

AT&T

To forward all calls:

  1. Open the dialer on your AT&T phone.
  2. Dial *21* followed by your 10-digit echowin number, then # (e.g., *21*5551234567#).
  3. Press Call/Send.
  4. Wait for a confirmation tone before hanging up.

To forward unanswered calls only:

  • Dial *61* followed by your echowin number, then #.

To forward when your line is busy:

  • Dial *67* followed by your echowin number, then #.

To forward when your phone is unreachable (dead battery, no signal):

  • Dial *62* followed by your echowin number, then #.

To turn off all forwarding:

  • Dial ##21# and press Call/Send.

To cancel individual forwarding types:

  • No answer: ##61#
  • Busy: ##67#
  • Unreachable: ##62#

Tip for echowin users: We recommend using the "forward all calls" option (*21*) so your AI agent catches every single call. If you prefer to answer some calls yourself and let echowin handle the rest, use the "no answer" or "busy" forwarding options instead.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile uses the same codes as AT&T:

To forward all calls:

  1. Dial *21* + your echowin number + # (e.g., *21*5551234567#).
  2. Press Call/Send and wait for confirmation.

To forward unanswered calls: Dial *61* + echowin number + #

To forward when busy: Dial *67* + echowin number + #

To forward when unreachable: Dial *62* + echowin number + #

To cancel all conditional forwards at once: Dial ##004#

To turn off unconditional forwarding: Dial ##21#

Note: If you were previously on Sprint, your phone may still use the older *72 / *73 codes. Try the T-Mobile codes first; if they don't work, fall back to the Sprint-era codes.

US Cellular

To forward all calls:

  1. Dial *72 followed by your echowin phone number.
  2. Press Call/Send.
  3. Wait for confirmation.

To turn off forwarding:

  • Dial *73 and press Call/Send.

Google Fi

Google Fi does not support dial codes for call forwarding. Instead:

  1. Open the Google Fi app or go to fi.google.com.
  2. Navigate to Phone Settings.
  3. Find the Call Forwarding option.
  4. Enter your echowin phone number as the forwarding destination.
  5. Save your settings.

How to Forward Calls From a Landline

If your business uses a traditional landline, forwarding works similarly across most providers (AT&T, Spectrum, CenturyLink, etc.):

  1. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone.
  2. Dial *72.
  3. Enter your echowin phone number (include the area code).
  4. Wait for a confirmation tone — on many systems, the network will actually ring the destination number. If someone (or your echowin AI agent) answers, forwarding is activated.
  5. Hang up. All calls to your landline now route to your echowin agent.

To deactivate: Pick up the handset and dial *73. Wait for the confirmation tone.

Good to know: When call forwarding is active on a landline, you'll typically hear a "stutter dial tone" (a broken, pulsing tone instead of the normal steady hum) when you pick up the receiver. This is a helpful reminder that forwarding is still on.

How to Forward Calls From VoIP & Other Providers

Google Voice

  1. Go to voice.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click the Settings gear icon in the top right.
  3. Under Account → Linked Numbers, click New Linked Number.
  4. Enter your echowin phone number.
  5. Google will send a verification code via call — enter it to confirm.
  6. Under Calls → Incoming Calls, make sure your echowin number is toggled on for call forwarding.

RingCentral, Vonage, Grasshopper, and Other VoIP Providers

Most VoIP platforms have a call forwarding or "routing rules" section in their admin dashboard. The general steps are:

  1. Log into your provider's admin portal or app.
  2. Navigate to Call Handling, Call Forwarding, or Routing Rules.
  3. Add your echowin phone number as a forwarding destination.
  4. Set the forwarding condition (all calls, after hours, no answer, etc.).
  5. Save and test.

If you can't find the setting, search your provider's help center for "call forwarding" or contact their support team. They can often push the setting remotely in minutes.

Verifying That Call Forwarding Is Working

After setting up forwarding, always test it:

  1. Grab a second phone (or ask a friend, a coworker, or use a free calling app).
  2. Call your original business number.
  3. If forwarding is working, the call should ring through to your echowin AI agent instead of your phone.
  4. Let the agent answer and have a quick test conversation. Check your echowin dashboard afterward — you should see the call logged with a transcript and summary.

If the call still rings on your old phone or goes to your carrier's voicemail, double-check that you entered the echowin number correctly and try the forwarding setup again.

Common Issues and Fixes

Calls go to voicemail instead of forwarding. Your carrier's voicemail may be intercepting calls before the forwarding kicks in. Try using "forward all calls" (unconditional forwarding) instead of conditional forwarding. On AT&T and T-Mobile, some users need to contact support to disable the built-in voicemail so forwarding takes priority.

Busy signal for callers. Double-check that you entered the echowin number correctly, including the area code. An extra digit or a missing one will cause this.

Forwarding works but stops after a few days. Some carriers (especially landline providers) deactivate forwarding after a set period. Re-enable it using the same codes. If this keeps happening, it's a good sign that you should consider porting your number to echowin permanently.

Forwarding vs. Porting: Which Is Right for You?

  Call Forwarding Number Porting
Setup time Under 2 minutes A few business days
Reversible? Yes, instantly No (permanent transfer)
Best for Testing echowin, temporary use Long-term / permanent use
Requires carrier change? No Yes, number moves to echowin
Cost Free on most plans Free with echowin

Our recommendation: Start with call forwarding. Use it for a week or two while you fine-tune your AI agent's instructions, knowledgebase, and workflows. Once you're confident that echowin is the right fit — and for most of our users, that realization comes within the first few days — you can port your number directly into echowin so everything lives under one roof.

When you're ready to port, echowin handles the process natively. You'll submit a porting request from within the platform, and your number will transfer over within a few business days. During the transition, your forwarding setup keeps calls flowing to your AI agent, so there's never a gap in coverage.

Make the Most of Your First Week With echowin

Now that calls are flowing to your AI agent, here are a few things to do in your first week:

Review your call logs daily. Your echowin dashboard gives you transcripts, summaries, and sentiment analysis for every call. Use these to see how your AI agent is performing and where it might need fine-tuning.

Update your agent's knowledgebase. If callers are asking questions your agent can't answer yet, add that information to your knowledgebase. The more your agent knows, the better it performs.

Set up integrations. Connect echowin to your Google Calendar for appointment booking, your CRM via Zapier, or your email for lead notifications. This turns your AI agent from a call answerer into a full business workflow.

Share the number (or don't). Since you're forwarding, you don't need to share your echowin number with anyone. Customers call your existing number, and the AI handles it behind the scenes. Seamless.

Wrapping Up

Call forwarding is the fastest way to get your echowin AI agent answering real business calls. It takes less than two minutes to set up, costs nothing on most carrier plans, and lets you experience the full power of AI-powered call handling without making any permanent changes to your phone setup.

When you're ready to go all-in, porting your number to echowin makes the setup permanent and even simpler. But there's no rush — forwarding gives you all the time you need to see the results for yourself.

Ready to get started? Log into your echowin dashboard, grab your agent's phone number, and set up forwarding using the instructions above. Your AI agent is ready to pick up the phone.
